Historic Research

Weston: Hopewell, VA

I began researching the enslaved history at Weston in the Spring of 2019. I was fortunate to locate a Commonplace Book 1792-186o, at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, which contains documentation about the sites enslaved. This list includes the names, ages, monetary worth, and in some instances the identity of the mother for several of the enslaved. It is extremely rare to run across this much information pertaining to the enslaved population at a location. Copies of these records along with additional research I have uncovered are now being shared with Weston and the Historic Hopewell Foundation to become part of their permanent historic record and updated tour.  ~LeeAnne 4/3/21
