Unfortunately, we received the devastating news on Tuesday that Chesterfield County will no longer fund the History Dept and docent positions after the end of this fiscal year, in June. What this means to the CHS ,(Chesterfield Historical Society), The County Museum and its part time Docent and the historic buildings is uncertain at this point.
Certainly, public response to the county leaders (Board of Supervisors) has the potential to affect what the final cuts will be, as we found last year when the budget cut was for our two part-timers. This year, the Parks and Rec department faces much more severe conditions and you may have heard that one-third of recreational programs will be cut in next year’s budget. What you haven’t heard is that the whole History section is part of that cut.
Our hope is to prevail upon the BOS to at least partially fund the History Section. That this can happen right before the 400th birthday of Henricus, which where the settlers came after Jamestown proved to be such a disaster and the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is unbelievable. Who will lead these commemorations if not the History Dept and CHS?
Spirited History Investigations has put together several proposals to help create funding for these sites and we are awaiting approval to start projects. Right now we could use you help.
How can you help:
People should be encouraged to e-mail their Supervisor with their thoughts. The Supervisors’ e-mail addresses are their last name, followed by the first initial of their first name @ chesterfield.gov. (e.g. warrena@chesterfield.gov for Art Warren)
These sites up for possible closure are:
CastleWood (home to the Chesterfield Historical Society and historic library)
Magnolia Grange Plantation ( will loose their docent who has been at this site for over 20 yrs)

We appreciate your love of history and are hopeful that you will join us as we try to keep our sites open and our staff employed!
